Digital panel trial and April Assessment

Although many Camera Clubs finish their meetings at Easter, Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club continue to meet every Tuesday through to July.  There have been a number of interesting evenings, and one was devoted to considering the possibility of introducing a digital panel competition, with the discussion led by member Pat Ball.   A panel competition is already held for prints and slides, where three related images are judged both as a group and individually.  Members submitted examples of how a panel might be produced digitally, and this resulted in a wide-ranging discussion.  It is likely that the digital panel competition will be introduced in next year’s programme.

Judge Gaston Alziary ARPS came along to assess members’ prints, digital images and slides, and, in the primary print section, he particularly liked Brian Lovelock’s “The Woodcutter”, awarding it 10 marks.  In the advanced section, there were four perfect 10s.  Betty Rackham was awarded two 10s - for “Golden Fields”, where Gaston particularly admired the soft lighting used to create a lovely landscape, and for “Love in the Rain”.  Sheila Read was awarded 10 marks for “Pounding the Rocks”, with Gaston commenting on the beautiful translucence of the sea.  Lorraine Slater received 10 marks for her unusual image of “Windows and Rooftops”, which created an interesting pattern picture!

In the primary digital image section, there were three 10s, with two awarded to Basil Hopkins, for his aircraft shot “Into the Clouds” and for his atmospheric image of “Loch Long at Dawn”.  Steve Williams also received 10 marks for “Sicilian Storm”, showing sunlit ruined columns against a stormy sky.   There were no 10s in the advanced section, but 9 marks were awarded to Terry Jamieson for “Concentrating Guardsman” and to Sheila Read for “Leaf Shadows”.

In the primary section of the slides, Terry Jamieson’s skill at photographing birds gained him 10 marks for two of his slides – “Marsh Tit” and “Nuthatch on Fence Post”.  There were no 10s in the advanced section, but Margaret Kirby was awarded 9.5 marks for “Ghent Gable”.

Viewfinders meet every Tuesday at 7.30pm in the Michelmersh and Timsbury Jubilee Hall and visitors are always welcome.  For more information, visit the club’s website at www.viewfinderscameraclub.org.
