Members of Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club were once again able to see a wide variety of members’ work at the last assessment of 2007, with the high number of entries including an encouraging number from new members.
Judge Adrian Wilson was asked to judge 79 prints, digital images and slides, quite a task to complete in an evening! Although comments were limited by time, Chairman Jack Whitemore felt that Adrian’s judging was always very helpful, focusing in particular on how photographs could be improved.
In the primary class of the prints section, Adrian was attracted to the immediate impact of Giles Smith’s “Reach”, taken from the crow’s nest of a yacht, and awarded it the maximum 10 marks. In the advanced section there were four perfect 10s, with the first being awarded to Jack Whitemore for the lovely translucent light in “Pelicans”, and the second to Sheila Read for the superb quality of “Feather Abstracts”. Tony Rackham gained two 10s – for the wonderful patterns in “Parsley Leaf” and for the gorgeous light in “Fairy Clubs”.
In the primary class of the digital image section, Adrian awarded a single 10 to Roy Lambeth for “James save the World”, a very colourful picture also telling a story. In the advanced section he awarded two 10s, to Basil Hopkins for his seascape “Evening Calm” and to Steve Williams for the interesting textures shown in “Leaf Pattern”.
It was encouraging on this occasion to see a larger slide entry, all in the advanced section, with four slides gaining the maximum 10 marks. Adrian felt the light was captured well in Terry Jamieson’s “White Berries” and Roy Lambeth’s “Autumn Glow”. Then he awarded maximum marks to George Marsh for the well-captured “Barn Owl”, and the last 10 to Martin Brown for the sharpness and impact of “Big Red Guitar”.
