Andrew Perry from Chichester Camera Club came along to judge members’ prints and digital images for Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s latest assessment. These are the most popular evenings held at the club, with members eager to hear the judge give a critique on their latest efforts. Andrew’s amusing style of judging also helped to make the evening very enjoyable.
In the primary print section, Andrew awarded a single maximum 10 marks to David Reeve for “Lily Pond”, which he felt was a nice composition, with smashing foreground detail.
In the advanced section, three tens were awarded, with Andrew admiring the quality of George Marsh’s “Arum Bud”, the lovely detail on Terry Jamieson’s butterfly “Silver Studded Blue on Bog Asphodel”, and the impact of the wide angle view in Peter Read’s “Harris Cloudscape”.
There were a substantial number of entries in the primary class of the digital image section, but no less than 6 tens were awarded! Andrew gave Paul Halliwell 10 marks for his well-captured frozen moment “Thai Net Fishing” and George Marsh was also awarded 10 for “Timba”, a real fun shot of an animal camouflaged in the background. Richard Marriott and Lynn Lambeth both gained two 10s, and all of them were wildlife images. Andrew liked Richard’s effective portrait of a “Two Banded Courser” and the bough of a fallen tree framing the “Zebras Drinking”. He considered Lynn’s “Rhino at Pilanesburg” to be effective because of the animal’s detail and shape in its environment, and he couldn’t fault her “Masked Weaver Bird”, describing it as a tremendous natural history shot.
In the smaller advanced section of the digital images, three more 10s were awarded. Andrew described Roy Lambeth’s “Blue Tit on a Cold Day” as a perfect shot, and Sheila Read’s “Tree Path” as somewhat surreal, with the paths to the trees creating an interesting shape. He also liked Stan Stubbs’ close-up of a “Jaguar” for its immediate impact.
In thanking Andrew for judging, chairman Jack Whitemore felt he was presented with a huge range of subjects, and it was noticeable that his comments were always made with feeling. With Andrew awarding no less than ten maximum marks during the evening, certainly a number of members will have gone home satisfied with the evening’s judging.
