Camera Club’s success at Salisbury Exhibition

Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club is one of 39 clubs in the Southern Photographic Federation currently taking part in the annual exhibition in Salisbury Library.  The southern region’s best photographs are on display and it is held there for three weeks in January each year.   Each club submits a panel of 6 prints and 8 slides, and this year the entries were judged by Peter Upton.

Viewfinders achieved 2nd place overall for their panel of slides, and congratulations therefore go to slide authors Helen and Nigel Charlton, Lynn Lambeth, Alan Hancock and Terry Jamieson for the quality of their photographs.   Commenting after the awards ceremony on 6 January, chairman Stan Stubbs said how pleased he was with the slide entry.  For the club, this was also particularly gratifying at a time when slides are losing their popularity in favour of digital photography.

From the club’s panel of prints, Bob Eaton achieved individual recognition, as his print “The Old Curiosity Window” was awarded Highly Commended, rounding off a highly successful exhibition.  If you would like to see a superb display of prints, the exhibition is open between 10am and 5pm Monday to Saturday until 29 January, and entry is free.   All the slide panels are shown during club evenings at the participating camera clubs in the Federation and they were enjoyed by Viewfinders on 16 January.

The regular club evenings have continued with the fourth assessment, where judge Francis Ouvry had 60 prints, digital images and slides to assess.  Francis is a regular visitor to the club, and he awarded three perfect 10s in the prints – to Terry Jamieson for his butterfly close-up “Small Copper”, to Sheila Read for her pattern print “Going to Seed”, and to Jack Whitemore for his coastal scene “Rocks and Sky”.   Sheila Read also scored the only two 10s in the digital images for her atmospheric “Trees on the Bank” and the haunting “Rossbeigh Skeleton”.  There were no 10s in the slides, but Peter Read scored 9 for his beautifully lit landscape “Lonely Cottage”.  Chairman Stan Stubbs, in thanking Francis for his judging, highlighted one of his comments in particular as something everyone should take to heart – that the choice of background in a photograph is very important and can often lead to the success or failure of an image.

Viewfinders meet every Tuesday at 7.30pm in the Michelmersh and Timsbury Jubilee Hall and visitors are always welcome.  For more information, visit the club’s website at www.viewfinderscameraclub.org.
