Fourth Assessment of the Year
Robin Dumbreck from Kinson Camera Club in Bournemouth came along to judge the prints and digital images entered for Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s latest assessment. The large number of newer members were well represented among the 62 entries Robin was asked to comment on and mark, which is an encouraging sign for the club.
In the primary section of the prints, Robin awarded a single perfect 10 to David Reeve for “Seaplane”, describing it as a cracking shot, with a good sense of movement. In the advanced section, two tens were awarded – with Robin admiring the backlit effect on Jack Whitemore’s “Gull in Flight”, and the Lowry effect provided by the distortion, colours and movement in Lorraine Slater’s “Ice Dance 2”.
In the large primary class of the digital image section, two more maximum marks were awarded. Richard Marriott received 10 marks for his well-captured “Mirror Image” of two giraffe–heads gazing at each other as if there was a mirror between them. Robin also awarded maximum marks to Gerald Ponting for “At the Fair”, taken at a steam fair near Malvern. He was attracted to the colours and composition, but felt that the well-positioned and interesting reflection at the centre of the traction engine wheel added interest to the image.
In the advanced digital images, no 10s were awarded, although Roy Lambeth was awarded a near maximum 9½ marks for the lovely detail in “Nuthatch 2”.
In thanking Robin for judging, chairman Jack Whitemore recognised the challenge given to him by the range of images presented. Robin said he was particularly impressed by the images in both primary sections, which were both of a very good standard.
