Geoff Roberts came along to judge members’ prints and digital images for Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s latest assessment. Geoff is a local professional photographer, mainly specialising in weddings and commercial assignments, and he opened his evening’s judging by saying he would be looking for images with quality to gain high marks.
In the primary print section, the highest 9 marks were awarded to Keith Bamber for his picture of Tower Bridge, and to David Reeve for his tractor driver study “Concentration”. In the advanced section, Geoff awarded no less than five 10s. He gave two maximum marks to Stan Stubbs for the excellent quality in his “Blue Tit” and “Jaguars”, and admired the simplicity of “The Leaf”, a beautifully executed study by Betty Rackham. He was also attracted to the fantastic sky in Peter Read’s “Creek Men”, and described wife Sheila Read’s “New Forest Abstract” as like painting with light.
The largest entry of the evening was for the primary class of the digital image section, and Geoff awarded another five 10s in this class. He felt George Atkins shot of the Spinnaker Tower at night “Under the Moonlight” had been carefully taken to show the subject in a different way. He described Tony Rackham’s dragonfly “Banded Demoiselle” as a perfect image, and the colours and treatment in wife Betty Rackham’s “Pink Water Lily” as a work of art. He enjoyed the situation caught by Jill Koernich in “Necking Giraffes”, and praised husband Mark Koernich’s “Venetian Sunrise” for the lovely light quality in the sky reflected on the boats.
In the advanced section of the digital images, Geoff awarded two maximum marks – to Terry Jamieson for his creative image “Deep Purple” and to Roy Lambeth for his lovely bird picture “Marsh Tit in Winter”.
In thanking Geoff for judging, chairman Jack Whitemore felt that members had been treated to a splendid evening. Geoff had used a wide range of marks, but had also recognised quality work by awarding a large number of 10s. However, his marks were always balanced with some very useful comments, often bringing the photographer into the discussion.
