Viewfinders’ second assessment of the year

The regular Assessments of members’ images at Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club continue to attract an increasing number of entries, particularly in the prints section, largely as a result of the popularity of digital printing. This is, however, particularly encouraging, with new members putting in work as well as the more experienced photographers.

The 78 prints, digital images and slides in the November assessment were judged by John Randall from the Andover Split Image Club, and this high number meant he had to keep his comments flowing.  Chairman Jack Whitemore felt that John’s interest in painting was clearly evident in his remarks, looking always for a centre of interest or a way through a picture, a policy that can be readily applied to composing photographs too!

In the primary class of the prints section, John admired Giles Smith’s baby portrait of “Ellen” and awarded it the maximum 10 marks.  In the much larger advanced section, John awarded maximum marks to Jack Whitemore for “Flamenco Dancers”, for its composition and eye-catching colour.  He really admired the quality of the light in Peter Read’s “Peaty Stream”, and awarded his second 10 of the evening in that class.  He also really liked the composition and the effective treatment used by Sheila Read in “Callinish Stones – Lewis”, so that image gained his third 10.

In the primary class of the digital image section, John’s artistic background again showed in his award of a perfect 10 to Stan Stubbs for “Floral Harmony”.  He really enjoyed this floral composition and the effective treatment that had been used.  In the advanced section, Basil Hopkins’ “Eilean Donan Castle” caught his eye, as he felt that the lovely sky really brought that well-known image to life.  It consequently received a perfect 10 marks.

In the much smaller slide section, there were no maximum marks, but Martin Brown received 9 marks for “Ballooning in Prague”.
