Second Assessment of the Year

Caroline Colegate from Bracknell Camera Club came along to judge the second of Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s popular assessment evenings.   Even without a slide section, there were still 62 images for her to assess, which is perhaps an indication of the growth in popularity of the digital image section.

In the primary section of the prints, the single perfect 10 was awarded to Dave Horscroft for “Above Glenridding”, with Caroline admiring this pleasant pastoral scene for the repetitive lines of the sheep and landscape. Of the two maximum marks in the advanced class, Caroline felt that Bob Eaton’s “Autumn Tunnel” had been beautifully captured, as it brought out all the different colours in the leaves, enhanced by the quality of the light.  Lorraine Slater was also awarded 10 for her ethereal and creative monochrome image “The Last Dance”, with an effective T-shape created by the dancers.

In the substantial primary class of the digital image section, maximum marks were awarded to Mark Koernich for “Drinks are on Me”, with Caroline commenting on the effectiveness of having the man with his drinks on the bike in colour, against a black and white background.  George Marsh was also awarded 10 for his well-captured “Family of Terns”, which Caroline felt was a step up from a straight natural history photograph as it showed some interesting bird behaviour.

In the advanced digital images, two 10s were awarded, with the first going to Terry Jamieson, with Caroline admiring the strong lines of the rows of lavender which were nicely framed by the strong fence-line in the foreground. The second 10 went to Roy Lambeth for his slice of life at “Brighton Beach”, which Caroline felt contrasted the vibrance of youth on one side of the shelter with the sombreness of old age on the other side.

Chairman Jack Whitemore thanked Caroline for a wonderful evening of very perceptive comments, and her interpretation of the feeling behind all the images.  He felt that everyone would be aware of the reasons for the marks she awarded, and would have learnt something from the evening.
