Second Assessment of the Year

Keven Sandall from Southampton Camera Club came along to judge the November assessment at Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club, and he must have been very popular with a large number of members at the end of the evening, as he awarded no less than 30 maximum marks overall.

Six 10s were awarded in the primary print class – to Keith Bamber for “Portrait of a Lanner Falcon”; Andrew Greenwood for “Mother and Ducklings”; Dave Horscroft for “Stonethwaite Beck, Borrowdale”; Sharon Lockray for “Marbled White”; Brian Lovelock for “Autumn in the New Forest”; and Arthur Nunn for “Gatehouse”.  All had produced high quality prints in Keven’s view, and deserved maximum marks.

In the advanced print class, Keven awarded 8 maximum marks, to George Atkins for “Waves Rush In”; Terry Jamieson for “Snipe”; George Marsh for “River Test”; Tony Pitman for “Nuthatch”; Betty Rackham for “Robin”; Tony Rackham for “Marbled White” and “Periwinkle”; and Peter Read for “Three Birches”.  Keven praised each print for its own particular quality – some for excellent detail, others for good coloration or superb light.

The primary digital image class must have been particularly pleased with the twelve 10s awarded in this class.  The digitally projected image class is a relatively recent introduction to the club, with all members initially starting in the primary section, gaining advancement to the advanced section only by achieving a specific number of high scores.  Both Pat Ball and Lynn Lambeth were congratulated on achieving their promotion to the advanced class on this occasion, both of them achieving two 10s on the night, Pat for “Caught in the Rain” and “Keyhaven Marshes”, and Lynn for “Painted Lady” and “Early Morning Skye”.

Others achieving maximum marks in the primary class were George Atkins for “Autumn Glory”; Mike Bennett for “Shades Seller”, Martin Brown for “Brighton Belle” and “Empty Deck Chairs”; Mark Koernich for “Tassels” and “Venice Dawn”; Richard Marriott for “Welsh Ponies” and George Marsh for “Abstract Poppies”.  Keven found George Marsh’s image to be a really excellent design picture, with the poppies enclosed in an attractive balloon-like shape.

In the advanced digital image class, four 10s were awarded – to Gerald Ponting for “Portcullis House”; to Peter Read for “Breamore Clock Tower”; and to Sheila Read for “Swirling Dahlia” and “Jet Shapes”.  Each of these images achieved their quality with different approaches and techniques but each of them worked well.

Chairman Terry Jamieson thanked Keven for his judging, which showed great attention to detail, and, unlike other judges, he had not been afraid to award a high number of 10s where he felt it was justified by the quality of the images.
