First Assessment of the Year

For the first assessment of the year, Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club welcomed Rosie Armes from Chichester Camera Club to judge the club’s work.  Rosie is well-known for her creative camera work, competing at international level, and she started the evening by setting out the three most important things she would be looking for in images  - that she should understand the picture, that the subject should be separated from the background and, most importantly, that there should be emotion in the photograph.

The Club has now decided to maintain a slide section only in trophy competitions, and therefore the assessments would now be restricted to prints and digital images.  However, on this occasion there were still 69 images for the judge to assess, which gave Rosie a very full evening.

In the primary section of the prints, there was a single maximum of 10 marks awarded to David Reeve for “Portree Images”, as Rosie really liked the colours and felt he had positioned himself nicely above the harbour.  This was followed by three perfect 10s in the advanced class –  awarded to George Marsh for his bitingly sharp “Little Egret”, to Sheila Read for her lovely abstract “Sand Trees”, and to Lorraine Slater for her soft and dreamy “Resting after the Dance”.

The primary class of the digital image section still remains much larger than the advanced class, as digital images have been recently introduced, and members need to gain promotion to the advanced class by producing regular quality images.  Three 10s were awarded, with Rosie admiring Pat Ball’s “Wing Walker” for its cleanness and the movement visible in the plane’s blades. She felt George Marsh’s “Nuthatch” and Stan Stubbs’ “Kingfisher” were both absolutely beautiful, highlighting the effectiveness of the diffused backgrounds in both images.

In the advanced digital images, Roy Lambeth was the photographer awarded both of the perfect 10s, gaining the first maximum mark for his effectively backlit moth “Meadow Brown”.  Rosie then awarded him a second 10 after enthusing over his very moody image of “Portree Harbour”, created by the dark sombre sky and the strong lighting on the houses.

Chairman Jack Whitemore thanked Rosie for a really terrific evening of judging with really free expression of her thoughts, and always giving sound reasons for any criticism.
