First Assessment of the Year

For Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club, the regular assessments of members’ prints and digital images are some of the most popular evenings in the club’s programme.  For the first one of the club year, Geoff Roberts was the judge - the only professional photographer offering his services in the southern region.  Geoff is perhaps best known for his wedding photography, but he is always a welcome visitor to the club, always looking for quality in the images presented to him.

Geoff started off the evening by saying how impressed he was with the quality of work in the primary print class, and he went on to award a total of 5 maximum marks in that class.  Two of these were awarded to Andrew Greenwood, with Geoff  admiring his close-cropped monochrome face portrait “Morning Shadow”, and his female figure in a church doorway “Zalongou”. A third went to Keith Bamber for his “Sika Deer”, and the fourth to Chris Maidens for the superbly lit “Pennington Marsh 2”. The fifth went to Colin Heading, who was particularly pleased to gain his first 10 for “St Pierre de la Fage”, which Geoff felt was a well composed scene.

In the advanced print class, Geoff awarded 3 maximum marks, two of which went to Peter Read.  He enthused over the quality of the light in his “Woodbridge Tide Mill”, and the lovely shapes in his “Llwyngwrl Chapel”. George Atkins gained the third 10 for “And – Execute”, captured in lovely lighting, leading Geoff to say that it was one of the best pictures of a Red Arrows display manoeuvre that he had ever seen.

In the primary class of the digital image section, four 10s were awarded.  The first went to John May for his “Yellow Frog”, and the second to wife Margery for “Me and my Bike”.  Marjory had captured a youth in an amusing pose, asleep on a seat with his bike beside him, and Geoff very much enjoyed the moment caught here!  The third went to Peter Read for his landscape in “Cape Primrose” and the fourth to George Atkins for “Summer Sunrise”, an image that Geoff felt really captured the feeling of a new day.  George’s image was taken from Old Winchester Hill, where he had used a long lens to great effect, magnifying the sun and bringing the horizon forward behind the tree.

In the advanced digital images, three 10s were awarded.  Basil Hopkins gained the first, for his superb butterfly image “Painted Lady”, and the second went to Sheila Read for the lovely shapes in her almost monochrome “Hostas Opening”.  The third went to Steve Williams for the amazing quality in his “Vervet Monkey”.

Chairman Terry Jamieson thanked Geoff for his judging and his very useful comments. Geoff had used a wide variation in his marks but he also awarded no less than 15 maximum marks during the evening, a reflection of his appreciation for the standard of work at Viewfinders.
