Les Fredericks Trophies

Members of Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club gathered recently for the annual award of the Les Fredericks trophies for set subjects.  This year the subjects chosen were Patterns for prints, Abstract for digital images and Close Up for slides. This resulted in a very interesting evening with a wide variety of approaches to each subject, and Ian Bigg came along to judge the entries.

In the print section, there were patterns from nature and from particular locations and some were specially created by the photographer.  Ian was attracted to a number of the entries but eventually awarded the trophy to Terry Jamieson for “Ruined by a Plastic Bottle”, a locational pattern created by the superb lighting on the curved steps.  Second place was awarded to Giles Smith for “Who Done It?”, an exciting print  he created by carefully laid out Smarties!  Third  place went to Terry Jamieson again for “Mausoleum Cloisters”, where Ian felt the lighting had been used well to create artistic patterns.  Terry and Giles also each received a Highly Commended for “Courtyard – Tunisia” and “Pencil Pose”, as did Peter Read for a pattern from nature – “Crossed Ferns”.

The smaller slide section produced some interesting close-ups, with Terry Jamieson getting a clean sweep by being awarded the first three places and the trophy.  The winning slide was “Cinnabar and Cricket”, which Ian felt was cleverly achieved, and this was followed by “Dahlia Detail” and “Snakeshead”.

The digital image section revealed some really stunning abstract compositions, and Ian said he was looking for real impact and the ‘Wow factor’ here.  He was impressed by a number of really creative images but awarded the trophy to Roy Lambeth for “The Smile”, which he felt had tremendous impact.  Second place went to Gerald Ponting for the intricate “Ice Patterns”, and third place to “Steve Williams” for the incredible colours in “Glass Abstract”.  Highly Commendeds were awarded to Steve Williams for “Leaf Abstract”, Roy Lambeth for “Melbourne Abstract” and Sheila Read for “Sunflower Centre”.

In thanking Ian for his judging, Chairman Jack Whitemore described the evening as a splendid evening’s entertainment, and he felt that the abstracts in particular had produced some very unusual pictures that must have been very hard to judge.
