CONGRATULATIONS - TRIPLE MFIAP SUCCESS

Of all the amateur awards MFIAP is possibly the most difficult to achieve. There are still only a handful in the UK and a few dozens worldwide.  Now the PAGB has three more including a married couple and a Welsh Dragon!  Only EFIAP holders are eligible and applicants must submit 20 stunning images on a theme of their choice.   Few photographers have the quality of work to apply and even fewer are successful.

Inter-Club Print Championship 2009

Sponsored by Darwin Clayton (UK) Ltd & Permajet Ltd

The Club Print Championship will be held at Deeside College Connahs Quay in Flintshire Saturday 24   Oct 2009 starting at 10.00 a.m.

We will use different technology this year and we are  confident  that  you  will  be  able  to  see  very good  quality  large  screen  projection  of  the  very best  prints,  colour  and  monochrome,  from  all over the UK.

You  may  be  able to pay on the day but we now have fewer seats and it is possible that admission will be limited to pre-booked & paid tickets only –   these   are   available   for   just   £8   each   from Christine Langford, Ty-Ni, Gwydryn Drive,  ABERSOCH,  LL53  7HU  -  Cheques payable  to  PAGB.    Please  include  a  stamped addressed envelope or an additional 35p.

Deeside  College  is  located  in  Connahs  Quay  - only  a  few  miles  from  Chester.    Access  is  very easy from the Midlands and the North and there is abundant accommodation in the area if you want to make a weekend of it. The CD of the GB Cup 2009 will be arriving at the participating clubs in the next few days with a total running time is 1 hour 13 minutes in two halves.

The CD includes the best pictures from both Open and Small Club competitions and will make for a great club evening.  Copies are available to non-participants at £11 inc. p&p from Rod Wheelans – address at the foot of the page.

... and they called it The Longest Name.  So what is the club with the longest name and the shortest for that matter?  I’ll give a prize to the person who can tell me both and get it right.  If there is more than one person, which I doubt, I’ll draw the winner from the correct entries.  Closing date 3 weeks.  The longest and shortest name will be  determined  by  a  count  of  the  number  of  characters,  excluding  spaces  and excluding words like “camera club”, “photographic society”, “imaging group”, etc.
Only the name will count so Wigan 10 Foto Club is 7.   The Editor’s decision is final.

PAGB PDI STANDARDS

I’ve had 2 or 3 requests to publish the PAGB recommended standards for Projected Images competitions.   No such standard exists since there is a range  of  different  equipment  to  choose  from.    The  following  has  been adopted as  “Best Practice” by the PAGB and will be employed for all its competitions for the foreseeable future.

The PAGB currently use fully calibrated Canon XEED 7 projectors.

File Format, Size and Projection

 1. Mode must be RGB Colour or Grayscale, 8 bits only. File Format must be .tiff (no compression) or .jpeg (compression 12). (.tiff is preferred and may be specified for some competitions).

2. Image  Size  –  maximum  1400  pixels  horizontal,  maximum  1050.

Please Note – 1400 x 1050 is the native resolution of the projector so these  dimensions  will  give  optimum  viewing?  We  will  not  resize your  files  unless  they  are  very  large  and  you  are  welcome  to  send smaller images which will appear a little smaller on the screen.

3.         DPI/PPI  makes  no  difference  but  if  it  makes  you happier  you  can size at 96 PPI.

4.          Images must not contain layers and must be completely  ‘flattened’ prior to submission.

5.         An image will be disqualified if it shows the title or author's name.

6.         We  will  project  in  sRGB  and  you  are  advised  to  convert from any other Colour space.

FIAP Definitions

I’ve  received  a  couple  of  requests  to  publish  the  FIAP  Definitions  of  Nature  and Monochrome which are specified in PAGB Competition rules but which we don’t list on the PAGB website at www.pagb-photography-uk.co.uk and which FIAP keep in a password protected area of their website at www.fiap.net

Definition of Nature Photography   FIAP INFO 2001/341 July 2001

Nature  photography  depicts  living,  untamed  animals  and  uncultivated  plants  in  a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity of natural phenomena, from insects to icebergs.

Photographs  of  animals,  which  are  domesticated,  caged  or  under  any  form  of restraint, as well as photographs of cultivated plants are ineligible.

Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable for nature subjects, such as barn owls or storks  adapting  to  an  environment  modified  by  humans,  or  natural  forces,  like hurricanes or tidal waves, reclaiming it.

The  photographer,  whatever  photographic  medium  is  used,  must  have  taken  the original  image.  Any  manipulation  or  modification  to  the  original  image  must  be limited  to  minor  retouching  of  blemishes  and  must  not  alter  the  content  of  the  original scene.

After  satisfying  the  above  requirements,  every  effort  should  be  made  to  use  the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs.

Definition of Black and White Photography (monochrome)  FIAP INFO 2003/383 F / E April 2004

A  black  and  white  work  ranging  from  very  dark  grey  (black)  to  very  clear  grey (white) is a monochrome work with various shades of grey.

A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in  black and white in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage.

On  the  other  hand  a  black  and  white  work  modified  by  a  partial  toning  or  by  the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category; such a work requires colour reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage.
