Print of the Year Competition

Some of the most coveted trophies at Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club are those for the Print of the Year competition, and this year the club welcomed Rosie Armes FRPS from Chichester Camera Club to judge their 2009 trophy awards.

The evening started with the entries for the primary class, with the bronze award going to Ian Ross for “Hedgerow Oak”, which Rosie felt was a well-seen image.  She then gave the silver award to David Reeve for “Seaplane”, which she felt was a lovely image capturing great movement.  Finally she gave the gold award and trophy to Andrew Greenwood for his “Impression of a Bluebell Wood, with Rosie admiring the beautiful treatment used and the natural vignette created by the framing.

Rosie then had to make her selection from the much larger selection of prints in the advanced class.   She gave the bronze award to Martin Brown’s stunning monochrome image of “Night-time at the Golden Gate Bridge”, which she felt was a bold image reminiscent of the 30s photographers.  The silver award went to Betty Rackham for the attractive composition she had created in her fern close-up “Gloriosa Lutea”.  However, Rosie gave the gold award and trophy to Peter Read for “Barn in the Reeds, which she felt made use of the fantastic light that existed at the time. She also considered that this was an image created by an artist, saying that this was the extra element we don’t normally see.

Chairman Terry Jamieson thanked Rosie for her judging, a task that is never easy for the judge, as she is really asked to select ‘the cream of the cream’.  Although no marks are given for this competition, most of the entries had already been awarded maximum marks in assessments by other judges during the year.
