Viewfinders Digital Image of the Year Trophies 2009

The best digital images of the year produced by Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club were judged this year by Bill Aven, a West Country photographer making his first visit to the club.  Bill said that he usually travels westwards to judge in the south western part of the country, but he had found coming to this area on a lovely sunny evening a refreshing experience.   Bill had come along to the club to award the Digital Image of the Year trophies for the primary and advanced classes.

This is the first year that there has been no slide of the year competition, with slides having been dropped from competition.  However the competitions for projected digital images are still undergoing transition, as they are still a fairly recent introduction in the Club, and therefore the primary class is still quite a large class as members remain in this class until they have achieved a certain number of high scoring images.  It therefore contains a number of very experienced photographers alongside those who are just starting out in photography.

In the primary class, the gold award and trophy was awarded to Peter Read for his infrared image of Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland, with Bill being attracted particularly to the unusual composition and the strength of the sky. The silver award and second place went to George Marsh for “Marbled White 1”, which Bill described as a super picture with the plant having the same subtlety of colour as the butterfly. Bill also greatly admired the simplicity of colours in Jill Koernich’s Venice Carnival study “Masked Features”, giving it third place and the bronze award.

In the advanced class, Bill gave the gold award and trophy to Roy Lambeth for “Nuthatch, a superb image of the bird with a lovely diffused background in typical nuthatch pose.  Second place and the silver award went to Sheila Read for her well thought-out pattern picture – “Seed Head Circle”.  Third place and the bronze award went to Terry Jamieson for “Essex Skipper”, with Bill admiring the lovely lighting on the butterfly which gave it its impact.

Chairman Terry Jamieson pointed out that it is a very hard job to judge the best image of the year as they are all good images, but he praised Bill for his constructive and concise comments.
