Digital Panel Trophy 2009

The award of Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s digital panel trophy produced a huge variety of subjects and styles of presentation among the entries.  Each panel has to include 3 images that are related in some way, perhaps with a common theme or showing a sequence of events, and they have to be shown simultaneously.  However, the use of the digital medium allows the authors to arrange the images in many different ways.

Alan Cooke from Beaulieu Camera Group came along to judge the competition, and, although he was asked to comment on each individual image, he was asked primarily to judge the quality of each entry as a panel.

Eventually he gave the trophy and Gold award to Jill Koernich for her panel “Moroccan Souks”, which Alan felt was a very strong panel with some very graphic images that had been put together with a great deal of thought.  He very much liked the presentation of the panel within a spice-coloured background, and felt that the panel was nicely balanced with the outer vertical images supporting the central image of the spice containers.

The Silver award and second place went to George Marsh for his panel “Butterflies”.  Alan praised the very high quality images of each of the butterflies, which were all beautifully positioned within diffused backgrounds, with the outer images facing inward to create a stunning panel.

The Bronze award and third place went to Richard Marriott for his very cleverly constructed panel “Poppies”.  Alan very much liked the clever desaturated background used, which effectively created another complementary image.  The panel he felt told the story of Remembrance Day – showing the poppy wreaths being made, soldiers around the war memorial and the veterans marching in sequence across the three images.

Alan concluded by thanking the members for giving him such wonderful images to talk about, and stressed the importance of an appropriate background in portfolio presentations.  Chairman Terry Jamieson thanked Alan for his first class critique and hoped that members would now understand how much an appropriate well thought-out background could enhance a panel.
