There were a good number of entries for the award of Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s digital panel trophy, and Ian Platt, known for his wealth of national and international experience, came along to assess the panel entries. Each panel has to include 3 digital images related in some way, perhaps with a common theme or showing a sequence of events, and they have to be shown simultaneously.
The entries represented a wide variety of subjects, and the method of grouping the images was just as varied. Ian was asked to score each of the three prints in each panel out of 10, and then to score each panel out of 20, giving a total score out of 50.
He awarded the trophy and the Gold award to new member Mike Liberson for his panel “Masai Village”, which scored a total of 45 marks – a perfect 20 marks for the panel as a whole, and a maximum 10 marks for the image of the Masai lady. Ian very much liked the presentation of the panel as one large and two small images, and thought the portrait of the lady was most striking. The smaller images of the groups were attractive for their spontaneity and nicely complemented the main image.
The Silver award and second place also went to a new member – Richard Marriott for “Brief Encounter”. Richard also scored maximum points for the panel, which Ian felt was a good idea, telling the story of jackals moving in on their prey.
The Bronze award and third place was shared by Sheila Read for her thoughtfully arranged almost abstract panel “Frosted Lungwort”, and Terry Jamieson for the different image styles created in his butterfly close-ups in “Knapweed Visitors”.
Ian concluded by commenting on the huge advantage that a digital panel has over print and slide panels, as it provides the opportunity to present the three images in different ways. Hence the variety of presentation used on this occasion. Chairman Jack Whitemore praised Ian for doing a marvellous job, as judging a panel competition requires a great deal of concentration. He warned the older members that they just might have to pull their socks up, with the two highest awards going to new members!
