The award of Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s annual landscape trophies is always a popular evening, and this year the entries were assessed by a very well respected judge – John Tilsley from Dorchester Camera Club.
The gold award and the Doug Bethell Print Trophy went to Terry Jamieson for “Sunrise over Backley Plain”, a delightful New Forest landscape. John described it as a beautiful composition, full of mood and atmosphere. The silver award went to Peter Read for 'Harris Cloudscape', a very dramatic and exciting monochrome picture, with a beautiful quality of light. Margery May gained the bronze award for 'Sunrise', with John being attracted to the feeling of recession, capturing both the beauty of the scenery and the harshness of the modern factory dominating the landscape.
The gold award and the trophy for digitally projected images went to George Atkins for 'A New Day', which John felt really captured the feel and mood, with the mist in the hollows and beautiful muted colours. Peter Read gained the silver award for 'Lindisfarne Castle', as John felt the unusual viewpoint and infrared treatment created a wonderful impression of a popular view. He gave the bronze award jointly to Peter Read for 'Buttermere Pines' and Roy Lambeth for 'Castle and Mountains'. He felt the pines enclosed by the mountains in Peter’s print gave a great sense of scale, and that Roy’s print was an excellent portrayal of Eilean Donan castle, with a beautifully subdued feel.
In the slide section, the gold award went to Peter Read for his beautifully captured ’Peaty Stream', with John describing it as a gorgeous picture. Terry Jamieson was given the silver award for 'Jurassic Coast', a bold and dramatic monochrome image, with all the headlands well depicted as they receded into the distance. Peter Read’s 'Yorkshire Barn' gained the bronze award, for its excellent composition depicting a traditional feature of the landscape.
John Tilsley concluded by saying that he was very impressed by the quality of the images overall, and that he had particularly enjoyed seeing so many black and white images.
