The photographs entered for Viewfinders of Romsey’s annual landscape trophies were this year assessed by a very well respected judge - Bryan Powell. He opened the evening by saying that he might not be the best judge in the world, but he was certainly the most honest! There has been some debate on what constitutes a landscape in photography, but Bryan went on to say that in his view seascapes were part of the landscape and have a place in this competition.
Bryan awarded the Doug Bethell Print Trophy to Sheila Read for “Cub Adventures”, describing it as ‘outstanding little picture’, where the trees had great solidity but where creativity had been used to good effect. Terry Jamieson was awarded second place for “Stile at Chapmans Pool”, a photograph that had lovely colour hues and a very strong composition. Third place went to Peter Read for “Bridestone Landscape”, which Bryan admired for its heavy sky, the type of landscape where he expected Heathcliffe to appear! Sheila was presented with the trophy by Doug Bethell’s widow, Doreen, who is a member of Viewfinders.
Bryan awarded the Trophy for Digitally Projected Images to Terry Jamieson for “Lakeside at St Moritz”. He particularly liked the textures of the rocks in the foreground and the feeling of movement on the water. Second place went to Gerald Ponting for “Forest Morning”, a simple picture created by a strong beam of light. Third place went to Peter Read for “Bryn Brith”, a monochrome picture which Bryan liked for its lovely lighting and textural quality.
In the much smaller slide section, Bryan awarded the Trophy to Terry Jamieson again for “Rhayader Falls”, which he found to be a nice image that worked well. Second place went to George Marsh for “Wye Valley”, with Bryan admiring its soft mistiness which gave it the effect of a sepia-tone print. Third place went to Peter Read, for the attractive subtle lighting in “Lily Lagoon”.
