The Les Fredericks trophies are awarded each year at Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club in honour of a past member who had worked enthusiastically for the club, and who had been a great instigator of competition to achieve improvement in photographic skills. The trophy competition in his memory has therefore been designed to encourage members to produce new work on set subjects, chosen each year by the members, and separate trophies are awarded for prints and digital images. The evening had a slightly delayed start, with judge Caroline Colegate being caught in a hold-up on the motorway, but she soon settled down to her task of assessing this year’s entries.
This year the topic for prints was ‘Men at Work’, and the images portrayed a variety of occupations, set within their working environment. Caroline gave the trophy and the gold award to Lynn Lambeth for “Glass Blower”, which she liked because the hint of movement involved the viewer in the activity, and the arc of light that highlighted the foreground created an interesting effect. Second place and the silver award went to Terry Jamieson for “The Cheese Seller”, as Caroline felt this low level shot made it different, and the man’s expression conveyed how proud he was of his produce. Third place and the bronze award went to Sheila Read for “Glass Engraver, Waterford”, with Caroline being attracted to the light pointing down on the crystal, and the man’s eye concentrating on the job.
The topic for the digital images was “Stormy Weather”, and the entries represented many different storm situations. Caroline awarded the trophy and gold award to Maureen Heading for “Dodging the Spray”, a lovely atmospheric shot through the sea-spray of a lady trying to walk along the sea-front at St Ives in storm conditions. Terry Jamieson gained second place and the silver award for “Snow Storm”, which Caroline felt was a good landscape composition, enhanced by a covering of symmetrical snowflakes. Third place and the bronze award went to Roy Lambeth for “Sky Boat”, with Caroline particularly liking the beautiful light and the boat set against the mountains reflected in the water.
This was an evening when those images with a slightly different approach to the norm achieved well in both the digital images and the prints. In thanking Caroline for her judging and well-considered critique, Chairman Terry Jamieson considered that it had been a splendid evening.
