30th June 2009.
This year butterfly walk was once again organised by George Marsh, uncannily he got both the weather and location just right. With the weather forecast predicting heat waves the event saw almost 30 members gather at Farley Mount on a very warm & sultry evening. Members suitably armed with a variety of tripods, lens and most protected by some form of insect repellent soon found that the wildlife was abundant and the walking was minimal, as just 20 yards or so from the car park were a host of ‘flutter bys’. Seen on the night were marbled whites (large and small), meadow browns, ringlets, skippers one of whom may well be the silver spotted type, whites, burnett moths, day moths and someone thinks they saw a small heath. The proof of course will be the identifying from the photos! On one bush a small army of caterpillars were seen stripping the vegetation, thought to be Sawfly but what type is yet to be confirmed.
Liz Whitemores comment on getting out of the car was all she could see was a sea of backsides spread across the area. With several new members getting help and advice from the more experienced ones the evening turned into quite a social event.
“Snapper” Liz managed to photograph several backsides and crop several heads and feet, in her attempt to get some candid shots.
As the butterflies settled down for the night another migration of sorts took place with most of those attendees turning up at the Kings Head in Hursley, where another pleasant hour or so was enjoyed. During these refreshments it was suggested that everyone who attended should submit one image from the evening for the website, hopefully not every photograph will be of marbled whites!!
