Meets on Tuesday evening from September to July at 7.30pm at the Michelmarsh and Timsbury Jubilee Hall New Road, Timsbury about 2 miles from Romsey, Hants.
We have a break for tea or coffee and a chat, midway through the evening and finish at about 10pm.
Viewfinders was formed in 1969 in Southampton, and moved to Romsey in 1973, by the early 1980s with the membership growing, and with space at the premises in Bell Street severely limited it was decided a change of venue was necessary. The club moved to its present headquarters at the Jubilee Hall in 1982. Throughout the years, although rules have changed and members come and gone, the aim of the club has always been to encourage its members, to enjoy their hobby in all its aspects without sectional interests taking any form of preference, thus enabling all members to get more fun from their photography.
We have a varied and interesting programme which includes subjects of interest to all members whether they work with prints, slides or more recently digital images. We regularly have visiting speakers who give lectures on various subjects, usually illustrated with prints or slides. Internal and external competitions in slides and prints, practical evenings and 'out and abouts ' on summer evenings and social events.
Competitions
Competitions play an important part in club life as they give members a chance to show their photographs, and to obtain helpful criticism and advice from the judge on points such as composition. Technique etc. and general tips on improving our pictures, of value to both beginners and the more experienced members. Some past results can be seen here
Audio Visual
The Viewfinders Audio Visual Group has been in existence for over 10 years. Until 2006 all presentations were done with 2 analogue slide projectors that allowed slide changes to be faded electronically. The group has now gone over to digital presentations using a digital projector. Each member of the group produces their own sequences. They use their home computer with 'Pictures to Exe' software, which allows a wide variety of different transitions between images including the usual fades. Each sequence is accompanied by music and commentary or just music. The group meets regularly and give several shows to clubs, WIs, TGs and other groups in the community during the winter months. Each member has at least one sequence per show.
We also give Audio Visual slide or digitally projected slide shows to the residents of Senior Citizens homes around Romsey. The schedule for this can be seen here.
If any club member is interested in digital audio visual please speak to the secretary Steve Williams or Norman Pease.
Digital Groups There are 2 at present.
Digital Group 1
Group 1 was formed in April 1999 by ten members of Viewfinders as a self-help group when digital imaging for amateurs was in its infancy. There were few instructional magazines or articles available then so we shared experiences to advance our know-how. Six of the original members still meet every month in each other’s houses, and two other Viewfinder members have joined us since. Evenings are usually spent looking at each other’s work, discussing the latest equipment or software - or just generally socialising! Ask Pat Ball for more details.
Digital Group 2
Ask Jack Whitemore for more information.
We have 50 plus members of all ages and experience, working in prints, slides and digital images.
Equipment Hire
The club owns a Gretag-Macbeth ‘EyeOne’ screen calibrator which for a small fee can be hired by members. This instrument is used to set up a unique colour profile of the computer screen (TFT or CRT type) which is part of the calibration procedure to ensure what you see on the screen is what is printed, or viewed on a digital projector.
